We have all done it, we have said things we regret almost the instant they left our mouth, sometimes what we said was embarrassing, other times hurtful and on the odd occasion, just dumb! Anyway you slice it we wish we hadn't said what we did. The reason for these errors in judgment are many; caught up in the moment, angry, joyful, too relaxed etc, the things said just aren't us.
I have done it on many occasions and lived to regret it, however thanks to a little trick I picked up along the way (and I can't remember where) the times I do it are getting less and less. The trick, "The Three Second Pause" it's simple, If you think what you are going to say could be embarrassing, hurtful or dumb you just pause three seconds before saying it, it gives you time to think twice about saying it and in turn helps avoid those awkward moments.
As Chuck Swindoll said recently: "I seldom feel sorry for the things I did not say..."
Will you use a three second pause today?
