Perspectives

I was remind this week by a friend that life is about perspectives. I was mentioning to a group of friends how I found it odd that I continued to get email "alerts" from The Weather Network about rain fall warnings in our area. We live in BC, Canada which has a climate much like England, so from October to June each year it rains and rains and rains, rain is not new to us and we are used to a lot of it, so a warning seemed odd to me.

One of those friends told us about a trip to a city in Eastern Canada and how she had made plans to do something with her friends only to have the plans cancelled because of rain. Her friends went on to tell her that if it rains they don't do anything because it is raining... Rain in their perspective was a "show stopper" she could not understand that being from BC, we'd do nothing if we stopped for rain!

Now those same friends of hers would likely do what they planned if they had 12" of snow, where as in BC it would be a show stopper.

All this weather talk made me realize how much of what we do and how we react to things is based on our perspective, how we look at things shapes how we react to them. We can look at the glass half full in life or half empty, we can look at things as an opportunity or as a problem.

The challenge I see is that when I run in to something that could be negative, be it a situation, a person or an event I need take a moment to look at it from another perspective, because there always will be one, I just have to consciously choose to look for it and act accordingly...

  1. Choosing to be positive IS the challenge isn't it? It's so much easier to just see things from our own perspectives. At least, for me that's the struggle (always).

  2. Yes it is, if we are honest I think we all struggle with it
