Because even old things in America are not really all that old when compared to Europe a lot of things have be designed/built and put together very efficiently. Take the "block" system for roads and buildings, something that is very efficient and makes a lot of sense.
One thing that doesn't make sense to me is why the game "football" has that name for the sport they play in the NFL, it isn't played predominately with your feet, it's a lot more like "handball" than "football".
A quick "Google" of American Football comes up with some information, it says the game was derived from the game "Rugby Football" which was played in England and then underwent may changes to the way it was played to come up with how it is played today.
I guess one of those changes wasn't the name! Oh well, just one of those odd things in the journey called life...
