I have been thinking a lot about the laws in North America mostly because of the out cry to the tragic events in the last little while.
It made me think about "Do we need more laws?".
I did some research and found that we have some pretty good laws with respect to all sorts of things from drugs to speeding and all things in between. So it made me wonder is the issue that we as a society need to make sure that those who break the laws we have in place are punished to the full extent of the law, rather than creating more laws.
Will having more laws help if those we already have are not enforced? If I look around in our community and nearby cities drugs are used, bought & sold freely and those breaking the law get a slap on the wrist, the laws do little to deter them. I see people speeding past road signs at 20 or 30 km/hr above the posted speed, the sign or the law against speeding have done little to deter them. So what makes us think that if we bring in more laws to try and protect society that anything will change.
Two locations locally have lowered the speed limit for vehicles (one from 50 km/hr to 30 km/hr & one from 50km/hr to 40km/hr) because people who were under the influence of drugs or alcohol kept wandering in to the road and getting hit by vehicles. Is that not the problem in our society, instead of dealing with the problem (the people wandering into the road) and holding those people responsible for their actions we change rules/laws.
As a society we have a lot of rules and laws in place, I think it is about time we started forcing the agencies in our community to use them before bringing in more that will simply not be used.
